Dongfeng Fengon

2026-07-28 01:50:01

Dongfeng Fengon is a passenger car brand under Seres Automotive (Hubei) Co., Ltd., operating within Dongfeng Motor Group's major independent framework. Alongside Dongfeng Aeolus, Dongfeng Nexen, and Dongfeng Venucia, it is recognised as one of the "Four Major Dongfeng Passenger Car Sub‑brands." The Dongfeng Fengon brand was born in 2013. Its operating entity, Seres Automotive (Hubei) Co., Ltd. (formerly Dongfeng Kangxin Automobile Co., Ltd.), was established in June 2003 as a 50‑50 joint venture between Chongqing Kangxin Industrial Group Co., Ltd. (now Seres Group Co., Ltd., SH601127) and Dongfeng Motor Group Co., Ltd., making it a mixed‑ownership vehicle enterprise. The company is headquartered in Shiyan, Hubei, and operates two major production bases in Shiyan and Chongqing, with four vehicle plants covering stamping, welding, painting, and final assembly. Its annual production and sales volume has exceeded 400,000 units, with nearly 4,000,000 users worldwide.

Dongfeng Fengon is guided by the core values of "everything for users, super struggle, embrace change, integrity and reliability, value sharing," and adheres to the car‑making philosophy of "bringing intelligence into life—accessible intelligent SUVs for everyone." Initially, it established a clear strategy of "focusing on MPV and SUV." Its product line now covers SUVs, MPVs, and new energy vehicles, with the goal of building a full‑category passenger car brand including MPVs, SUVs, NEVs, and sedans.

Development History

The Dongfeng Fengon brand is a strategic product of cross‑system collaboration between Dongfeng Motor Group and Kangxin Group. Its development can be divided into the following stages:

Joint Venture Foundation and Brand Precursor (2003–2012). On June 27, 2003, Chongqing Kangxin Industrial Group and Dongfeng Motor (now Dongfeng Motor Group) jointly established Dongfeng Yuan'an Vehicle Co., Ltd. (later renamed Dongfeng Kangxin Automobile Co., Ltd., now Seres Automotive (Hubei) Co., Ltd.), with both parties holding 50% stakes, pioneering a mixed‑ownership model between state‑owned and private enterprises. On May 22, 2005, the first Dongfeng Kangxin micro‑vehicle was launched in Wuhan. The Dongfeng Kangxin brand quickly gained traction in the micro‑vehicle market and, in 2007, became the first domestic micro‑vehicle brand to pass EU technical standard certification, exporting to dozens of countries. In May 2010, the 500,000th vehicle rolled off the line; in May 2012, the 1,000,000th vehicle followed, laying a solid manufacturing foundation for the passenger car brand. That same year, the company launched two upgraded models—the V29 and C37—moving toward the higher‑value market.

Brand Birth and First‑Generation Product Launch (2013–2015). On April 19, 2013, Dongfeng Kangxin officially entered the passenger car market with the compact MPV "Dongfeng Kangxin Fengon," marking the birth of the Dongfeng Fengon passenger sub‑brand. In 2015, the Fengon 370 was launched in Wuhan, further expanding the product line.

SUV Explosion and Peak Years (2016–2018). In June 2016, the Fengon 580 launched in Boao, Hainan. With a 7‑year/150,000‑km super warranty and strong value‑for‑money positioning, it quickly became a hit, with monthly sales nearing 20,000 units. In 2017, the Fengon 580 Connected version launched in Hangzhou, featuring the Lin OS 3.0 smart system. That same year, the Fengon S560 was launched in Shenzhen. In 2018, Dongfeng Fengon released its first intelligent coupe SUV, the Fengon ix5, equipped with the new‑generation Lin OS 4.0 system with an AI recognition rate of 99.99%. During this period, Dongfeng Fengon became a dark horse in the Chinese independent passenger car market, driven by the Fengon 580 and S560, and brand momentum peaked.

Deepening Intelligence and New Energy Exploration (2019–2022). In 2019, Dongfeng Fengon entered a multi‑point layout stage. The Fengon 580 Pro launched with iFlytek's Feiyu OS 2.0 AI Driving System; the Fengon ix7 integrated 4WD and smart connectivity; and the Fengon E1 (pure electric SUV) and E3 EV/EVR (extended‑range) were introduced in the new energy space. In 2020, the compact SUV Fengon 500 was launched at an entry‑level price. From 2021 to 2022, the brand continued to promote micro EV models like the Fengon MINI EV and updated fuel models such as the new Fengon 580. In 2022, Dongfeng Fengon's cumulative sales remained among the top of independent brands.

Strategic Marginalisation and Market Decline (2023–Present). From 2023 onward, as group resources increasingly shifted toward the AITO Wenjie brand (co‑developed by Seres and Huawei), and parent company Seres Group focused new energy and smart investments on premium brands like Seres and Wenjie, Dongfeng Fengon—as a traditional fuel and entry‑level passenger brand—saw a significant slowdown in product updates and new launches. From 2024 to 2025, key models like the Fengon 580, S560, and 500 remained in minor facelift states, new vehicle development stalled, dealer networks shrank, and the brand became increasingly marginalised in the domestic market. At the 2025 Beijing Auto Show, the Dongfeng Fengon booth displayed only a handful of fuel SUVs, with no new platforms or concept cars. Entering 2026, actual monthly sales of Dongfeng Fengon in mainland China had fallen below 100 units.

Product Lineup

The Dongfeng Fengon product line is centered on SUVs, supplemented by MPVs and new energy vehicles, covering a price range of 50,000 to 150,000 yuan.

SUV Series is the main sales force for the brand, mainly including five core SUV models: Fengon 580, Fengon S560, Fengon 500, Fengon ix5, and Fengon ix7. The Fengon 580 is positioned as a mid-size 7-seater SUV, with a length of 4700mm and a wheelbase of 2780mm, making it the most representative product of the brand. The Fengon S560 is positioned as a compact SUV, offering a 7-seater layout, equipped with a 1.8L engine matched with a CVT gearbox. The Fengon ix5 is positioned as a smart coupe SUV, equipped with the Lin OS 4.0 Super Smart Link System and multiple power options such as 2.0TGDI, 1.5T, etc. It once used smart interaction as a core selling point and is also an early representative work representing the technological sense of Dongfeng Fengon products. The Fengon 500 is positioned as a compact SUV. The Fengon ix7 is a mid-to-large size flagship SUV, launched at the 2019 Guangzhou Auto Show.

MPV Series is the foundational product line at the beginning of the brand's establishment, mainly including compact MPVs such as Fengon 330, Fengon 380, and Fengon 370. The products focus on multi-seat layouts and spatial practicality, with a price range of 50,000 to 80,000 yuan, maintaining a good reputation among small and micro enterprise owners in tier 3 and tier 4 cities.

New Energy Series includes pure electric/extended-range models such as Fengon E1, Fengon E3, and Fengon MINI EV. The Fengon E1 is the first pure electric SUV of Dongfeng Fengon, with a length of 3699mm and a comprehensive range of 271 kilometers. The Fengon E3 offers two power versions: pure electric (EV) and extended-range (EVR). The Fengon MINI EV is a micro pure electric car.

Market Performance

Dongfeng Fengon hit its sales peak after the Fengon 580 launched in 2016, but in recent years its sales have fallen sharply, and the brand has become marginalised among mainstream passenger car brands. In 2022, Dongfeng Fengon still maintained an annual sales scale of tens of thousands of units. From 2023 onward, as domestic new energy penetration rose and fuel models were increasingly replaced by NEVs at comparable price points, the market share of Fengon's fuel vehicles continued to shrink.

By 2025, sales showed a steep decline. According to CPCA wholesale data, Dongfeng Fengon's cumulative sales for the full year came to approximately 10,278 units. Sales in the second half continued to fall: July 1,036 units, August 958, September 1,214, October 796, November 1,709, and December 314—a year‑on‑year drop of 86.4% for the month. In December 2025, Fengon 580 sales stood at 188 units (2,757 cumulative for the year); Fengon 500 at 49 units (2,444 cumulative); Fengon S560 at just 9 units; and Fengon MINI EV annual cumulative sales of only 186 units.

Entering 2026, the downward trend continued. According to CPCA narrow‑scope passenger car wholesale data, January 2026 brand sales were 691 units, down 5.3% year‑on‑year but up 120.1% month‑on‑month. In February, monthly sales plunged to 54 units—a 77.69% year‑on‑year drop—with a market share of just 0.01%, dropping the brand to 92nd place. In March, Fengon S560 sales were 360 units, up 41.7% year‑on‑year, and it was the brand's only mainstream model with consistent data that month. Total brand sales in Q1 2026 reached about 1,000 units; according to CPCA methodology, the first two months combined for just 169 units. In the overall China market ranking, Dongfeng Fengon currently sits outside the top 90.

Core Technology

Dongfeng Fengon takes the "Super Intelligence Strategy" as the core of technological transformation, making layouts in intelligence, new energy powertrains, and connectivity services.

Super Intelligence Strategy and Smart Cockpit. Dongfeng Fengon released the "Super Intelligence Strategy" in 2017, taking intelligent technology as the core differentiation point for brand upward breakthrough, with the Lin OS Super Smart Link System as the technical main line. The Fengon 580 Connected version and Fengon S560 Connected version can realize more than 40 functions such as voice control, remote control, and life entertainment, equipped with the iFlytek Feiyu OS 2.0 AI Driving System. The Fengon ix5 is equipped with the new generation Lin OS 4.0, its AI algorithm recognition rate reaches 99.99%, possesses a 25ms ultra-fast target recognition speed, supports multi-screen interconnection and OTA online upgrades.

New Energy Technology. Dongfeng Fengon's new energy product line includes two technical paths: pure electric and extended range. The Fengon E3 EVR is equipped with the new generation extended range technology and all-time electric drive technology, adopting a 1.5L engine + 50kW generator extended range scheme, supporting two energy replenishment methods: charging/fueling, aiming to solve range anxiety. The Fengon E1 is built based on the Renault-Nissan CMF-A platform, equipped with a 33kW permanent magnet synchronous motor and an electric vehicle ASIL-D level overcharge protection system and battery intelligent thermal control technology, supporting mobile APP remote control functions.

Powertrain. The Fengon ix5 offers multiple power choices such as 360TGDI, 280TGDI, 220T, and hybrid. The Fengon 580 Pro is equipped with a 1.5TGDI engine, matched with a 6AT gearbox; the Fengon ix7 is equipped with a 2.0T GDI engine matched with a 6AT gearbox.

Overseas Layout

Dongfeng Fengon's overseas presence relies on Dongfeng Motor Group's global channel network. It has established sales networks in markets including Europe, South America, and Southeast Asia. As early as 2017, Dongfeng Fengon had entered countries such as Germany, Spain, the UK, Indonesia, Chile, Colombia, and Ecuador, achieving bulk sales. In 2025, the Fengon ix5 landed in the Spanish market with a starting price of €28,500 (approximately 230,000 RMB), double its domestic price range of 99,800 to 149,800 RMB. The Fengon 580 was also launched in Morocco, alongside the Fengon ix5. Dongfeng Motor has set up seven overseas marketing subsidiaries and exports to more than 150 countries and regions. Dongfeng Fengon leverages this global sales system to expand its overseas footprint alongside other Dongfeng brands. However, separate annual overseas sales data for the Fengon brand is not available. Its export volume remains small, and in some regions, sales channels exist but are no longer actively restocking.

Future Outlook

Dongfeng Fengon has not currently announced an independent exclusive strategic planning. The parent company Seres Group has concentrated core R&D and market resources on its high-end new energy brands AITO Wenjie and Seres. The proportion of technology, channels, and funding tilt towards Dongfeng Fengon within the group continues to decline. The Dongfeng Motor Group released the "Eastern Wind Rising 2030" plan at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, clarifying strategic goals of challenging 5 million global sales and new energy vehicle sales share exceeding 70% by 2030. However, this grand plan at the group level mainly revolves around new brands such as Dongfeng Yijing, Yipai, Voyah, and Mengshi. The Dongfeng Fengon brand does not appear as a core brand in the group's "2030 Main Brand Array."

Nominally, Dongfeng Fengon has not been officially announced as a discontinued or delisted brand. At the product planning level, the brand has not yet announced any all-new energy platform or new generation product release plans. Regarding market maintenance, Dongfeng Fengon mainly relies on the inventory of old fuel SUVs such as Fengon 580, Fengon S560, and a small number of consumer necessity orders to maintain extremely low-level operations. Within the Dongfeng Group's major independent framework, Dongfeng Fengon has stepped back from being one of the "main passenger car brands" to an edge brand. Its future direction depends more on whether new platform resources are given or the brand line is proactively contracted and merged into other Dongfeng series brands under group coordination. Given the current continuous slump in brand sales and voice, Dongfeng Fengon is currently in the strategic marginalization phase. Against the macro background of high concentration in the Chinese automotive market and new energy accelerating replacement of fuel vehicles, the brand's future development prospects are full of uncertainty.
